Children are Really a Bundle of Joy for Parents

A Pew Research Center survey has found that for most parents, children are actually the bundle of joy they are promised to be.

Around 87 percent said "the joy of having children" was a key reason for having that first child, The survey included 770 parents, who were quizzed over the phone. Around 46% of those surveyed said that two was the ideal number of kids to have.

Steven Martin of the Maryland Population Research Center at the University of Maryland, said that most parents who had three children wished they had two. "It could be people are saying 'I'm pretty worn-out. I love them, but I would have stopped at two.' Or, they could mean 'Four was great for me, but for most families two is best,' " he added.

76% said they did not plan to have anymore children as they did not have time to devote to them, while 72% said cost was a main worry.
