The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today gave its approval for continuation of the Revised National TB Control Project (RNTCP) for five years - - from April 2007 to March 2012 - - in the States of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttranchal.
The CCEA also gave its approval for implementation of Public Private-mix (PPM) project - - Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh - - by Indian Medical Association (IMA) with grant assistance from the Global Funds for AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFATM).The cost of the project is Rs.10922.20 lacs. Out of this, the cost of implementation of RNTCP would be Rs.9179.00 lacs and the cost of PPM project would be Rs.1744.00 lacs.
The goal of this project is ‘to decrease mortality and morbidity due to TB and to expand the reach of RNTCP through enhanced coordination with private health providers’.
The project will be implemented as a Centrally sponsored scheme by the Central TB Division of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
In the States/Districts, the programme will be implemented through the primary health care infrastructure of the state as a component of the National Rural Health Mission, through the mechanism of integrated State and District Health Societies.
The direct benefit for the project will be treatment of 4.4 lakh TB patients during the project period of whom at least 3.74 lakh patients would be cured. This will result in averting at least 80,000 deaths of whom 40,000 would be adults.
