Britons will treat themselves to an average 3.63 roast potatoes and 2.95 chipolatas during Christmas dinner, thus consuming 6,000 calories on a single day, according to a new poll.

The survey by Sainsbury's found that during the course of Dec 25, people will eat on average 6,000 calories compared with the 2,000 per day which is recommended for women and 2,500 for men.

And to work this enormous food intake off, people will have to take a 60-mile after-dinner walk.

The poll discovered that the most popular average start time for the meal is 2.24pm, and the most popular type of poultry to have with the dinner is turkey breast, along with an average 2.54 spoonfuls of Brussels sprouts.

One third (35 percent) of respondents expected to toast the meal with champagne while 37 percent chose sparkling wine, the poll said.

But despite the nationwide binge, 45 per cent of people said they did not intend to diet to minimise the impact.

"It's a relief that Christmas comes just once a year because if we ate like this every day, we'd be in trouble," the Scotsman quoted Charlie Parker, a nutritionist from Sainsbury's, as saying.

But she said turkey meat was a good source of low-fat protein while potatoes and parsnips were full of fibre, adding: "While the festive plate might be heaving, it's still possible to make it well-balanced and highly nutritious - if a little heavy on the calories."

More than three-quarters (77 percent) of the women questioned for Sainsbury's expected to be in charge of the cooking on Christmas Day.

The online poll of 2,583 adults for Sainsbury's was carried out by market researchers YouGov earlier this month.
