Britons do not have adequate knowledge of wines, a novel study has revealed.

The survey of 2,000 drinkers, which was conducted for the launch of a 2.99poubnds iPhone app called WINEfindr, found that 90percent drinkers do not know how their favourite wine is made.

While 62 percent Brits think they know about wine, they did not even know some basic facts, the poll revealed.

For instance, 87percent wrongly said only white grapes can be used to make champagne when in fact red varieties are as good.

Three-fifths said all wines get better with age when many do not, while 67percent did not know a single point of difference between a Sauvignon Blanc and a Sancerre (the first is a grape variety, the other a region where wine is produced from the Sauvignon Blanc grape), reports the Daily Express.

Two-thirds admitted ignoring or bluffing their way through a restaurant sommelier's advice and pretend to understand his consultation.
