The four-year-old has been battling congenital heart defect Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) since the age of two, but just 48 hours after what was probably a life-saving surgery, Alex is bouncing about in the hospital.

His parents Ben and Diane are proud of their son, who is obsessed with Superman. "Alex is always climbing and jumping off things. He's a bundle of energy and thinks he's invincible. Now he's able to run around and pretend he's Superman to his heart's content. He's amazed us all," Diane said.

Alex would regularly turn blue and start to wheeze when he was 18 months old. It was in the Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow that Alex's heart issues came to light. The couple moved to Hull where the complex surgery to fix the holes took place in May.

"Alex is a brave boy and was able to go home very quickly after his operation. His positive attitude to recovery was greatly helped by support from his parents and the good care received from the Congenital Cardiac Team at the hospital," Dr Rafael Guerrero, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Leeds General Infirmary told the Telegraph newspaper.
