Former US president Bill Clinton revealed that he has completely gone vegan and has ditched dairy and meat items from his diet following a double heart scare soon after his presidency ended.
Clinton revealed that he underwent first of his two quadruple bypass surgeries in 2004 and though he cut down on his calorie intake, he was forced to repeat the procedure last year. Clinton was approached by Dr Dean Ornish, who had earlier worked with White House chefs to provide a healthier diet for the president.
AdvertisementDr Ornish said that he advised the former president to opt for a more drastic change in his dietary habits since his genetic makeup meant that merely cutting down on calories was not helpful. Clinton said that he took Dr Ornish's advice and has now stopped eating any meat and only takes a bite of turkey during Thanksgiving.
"I still - without any scientific basis to support what I did - was taking in a lot of extra cholesterol without knowing if my body would produce enough of the enzyme to support it, and clearly it didn't or I wouldn't have had that blockage. So that's when I made a decision to really change", Clinton told the CNN.
