Anti-smoking Raids Begin

by Rajashri on May 26 2009 8:12 PM

Chandigarh saw 14 anti-smoking raids conducted on pubs and discos to asses if they were following the Control of Tobacco Products Act (COPTA), which came into effect on October 2, 2008.

Among the raided businesses, Shahenshah Bar and Pub, Sector 17, and the bar at Jullunder hotel, Sector 22, were found to be guilty of not displaying the "No Smoking" sign and were hence fined. The Mission disco in Sector 9 was also fined for keeping ashtrays.

Home secretary Ram Niwas was happy with the results of the raids and said they would keep at it to see that Chandigarh remained a smoke-free city.
