American student Amanda Knox, who was found guilty of murdering British student Meredith Kercher, was placed on suicide watch.
She spent her first night as a convicted murderer under surveillance from Italian authorities.
According to Knox's lawyer, authorities feared that the devastated 22-year-old might try to harm herself.
"She's tired and disappointed," the New York Post quoted attorney Luciano Ghirga as saying.
Knox, who is known as "Foxy Knoxy", got 26 years for sexually assaulting and killing her roommate in Perugia, Italy.
Her ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, got 25 years, and another friend 30 years.
