Acne Pill Linked to Depression
Contraceptive pill, Dianette also used to treat acne, has come under the review of the drug regulation authorities after concerns were expressed about its link to depression.

Dianette has been a useful contraceptive that was licensed as a hormone treatment for severe acne. Dianette came under review when over 100 women said they suffered depression after the drug was prescribed for them.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) is reviewing Dianette after the charity APRIL (Adverse Psychiatric Reactions Information Link) raised concerns about its side effects. They have sent a dossier to the agency of reports about the experiences of these women when they were on the drug

Depression is a known adverse reaction of Dianette, as is stated on its labelling. A spokeswoman for MHRA said that a review was taking place to see if the advice needed to be updated or changed. She also added that an expert advisory group would discuss the effects.

According to Schering UK, the manufacturers of the drug, ‘Severe depression is listed in the patient information leaflet as a reason for stopping Dianette immediately.’
