It was not until 23 years later that a counsellor helped her apply for separate housing.

In 2008, she felt able to ask the police to investigate. Her father at first denied the allegations, but later admitted his crimes.

The man, now in his sixties, has pleaded guilty to two counts of indecently assaulting a girl under 16, 10 counts of incest and a count of common assault.

The prosecution is seeking a 25-year term. But Defence lawyer Graham Thomas, SC, argued against a "crushing" sentence, saying his client was unlikely to survive any long jail time due to ill heath.

He said his client had a history of depression and chronic alcohol abuse, which affected his health and intellect.

The father is due to be sentenced on a later date.
