79-Year-Old Brain Dead Woman Gives a New Lease Of Life To Delhi Man
A 79-year-old brain-dead woman donated her liver to a 55-year-old man with chronic liver disease on October 25.
The woman was admitted to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru on October 21. According to doctors who treated her, she had intra-cerebral bleeding. The patient failed to respond to treatment and she was later declared brain dead on October 24.

Dr A Olithselvan, chairman, division of liver transplant, at the hospital, said, “The woman was declared brain dead. Her husband, a retired army officer, consented to organ donation.”

The recipient from New Delhi had been waiting for organ transplant for the last six months.

Dr Olithselvan explained that if one had a healthy living and no co-morbid conditions, their organs could be donated even if they are old. “In this case, although the patient was old, her organs were still in good condition. She had a normal lifestyle with no associated health ailments. Hence, the doctors could consider her liver for a transplant,” he added.

Her heart valves and corneas have also been donated according to officials of the Zonal Co-ordination Committee for Organ Transplantation.
