43-Year-Old Woman Sucummbs to H1N1 Influenza Fever in Trichy, Tamilnadu
Swine flu or H1N1 influenza virus takes a life in Tiruchurapalli district in Tamil Nadu. A 43-year-old woman had fallen victim to the H1N1 virus and died at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH).
Nagakanni, wife of Chellasamy of Rettavaikkal has been suffering with severe fever and respiratory problems for the past seven days. She was admitted in a private hospital for treatment. But as her condition was deteriorating, doctors suspected that she might have been infected with swine flu. They did a blood test and the results tested positive for H1N1. Then they referred her to MGMGH where she died.

“My mother was running high temperature from November 5 and was admitted to a private hospital on November 7. The medical officials did not inform anything about her health till the night of November 9 and they said got H1N1 before they insisted us and referred to MGHMGH,” said the victim’s son Chellapandi.

Trichy has already reported 19 swine flu cases from January and this is the first swine flu death. The patient had traveled to Andhra Pradesh recently where she might have contracted the virus.

J Radhakrishnan, State health secretary, said, “Going by the present scenario, the patient had traveled to many places. She already had asthma, which would have been another detrimental factor.”
