4-Year-Old Becomes the First to Undergo a Cadaver Pediatric Liver Transplant in India
The country’s first cadaver pediatric liver transplant was performed on a four-year-old at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad.
Salama, was suffering from a rare liver disease called Ornithine Transcarbamylase (OCT). The disorder affects her metabolism where she lacks enzymes in the liver that can process proteins.

A team of transplant surgeons led by Manish C Agarwal at Apollo Hospitals, performed a pediatric liver transplant surgery on Salama.

Mohammed Mujib, father of Salama, said, “Till her second year she was fine but problem started two years ago, when she was two-and-half years. When we consulted doctors we were told that liver transplant is the only option for her problem. We waited for more than two years as it was highly difficult to get a liver donor for a child.”

Parents of an eight-year-old child accepted to donate their child’s organs, who was declared brain dead after getting injured in a road accident. The child’s liver was transplanted to Salama.

“This is the first cadaver liver transplant for a child in India, and though it’s an achievement for us, the real credit goes to the cadaver organ donor kid, because of which the organ transplantation was possible,” said Manish.

“A multidisciplinary approach involving surgeons, doctors and support staff from various specializations is needed for performing a pediatric liver transplantation. The surgery which was very complex but has been so successful that Salama was moved out of the ICU in just three days and discharged after 12 post operative care,” he added.

“This is like a new lease of life for my daughter. We are hoping and praying that Salama will be able to lead a normal life,” said her father as he chirpily watched his kid take a bite of a chocolate.
