 38-year-old’s Diet Coke Addiction
Darren Jones, 38, is a self-confessed coke addict. His addiction is so severe that he downs about 18 cans of coke a day and cannot leave home without a bottle in hand.
This habit has worsened in the last 10 years but he insists that it hasn’t led to any medical problems.

He must have consumed around 65,700 cans in the past 10 years.

An earlier study had found that aspartame and saccharin enhanced the craving to consume more, as artificial sweeteners can stimulate food reward brain centers without satisfying the person completely.

Dr Vicci Owen-Smith, NHS Stockport's deputy director of public health, said: 'Diet Coke has artificial sweetener and contains caffeine. Too much of either of these may cause harm.'
