Police investigated the sale of a boy in Odisha's Jajpur district to find that the mother, a 20-year-old, had sold her 17-month old son with the assistance of a rickshaw puller, for Rs.5000 to buy herself a pair of jeans, a few tops to match it and a mobile phone.
Rakhi Patra of Mundamala village is a daily wage earner.
Jajpur superintendent of police, Deepak Kumar said, "She had confessed before us that she had purchased all these items from the money out of the sale of her baby for Rs.5000. We had handed over the baby but to our utter dismay, the mother refused to take him to her custody in the presence of the general public."
The child has been handed over to the child welfare committee.
