At least 12 people have died and several others are in a critical condition following the consumption of adulterated cough syrup in Shahdra Town of Lahore in Pakistan.

Police confirmed that the men had drunk the cough syrup to get intoxicated. Doctors at the state-run hospital in the area confirmed that the syrup was contaminated.

Police also revealed that the cough syrup was being sold in several stores at a price range of Rs 25 to Rs 40 a bottle. They claimed that the men who fell ill after consuming the syrup were drug addicts.

Officials have registered a case against several dealers who were selling the bottles in the area.
