10-Year-Old Cardiomyopathy Patient from Kazakh Receives Heart-Lung Transplant in Chennai

A 10-year-old girl from Kazakhstan, who had been undergoing treatment for dilated cardiomyopathy at Chennai Fortis hospital, received heart-lung transplant on Tuesday.

Cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the heart swells abnormally and becomes too weak to pump blood.

The donor was identified as Adith Paulson, a 12-year-old boy from Kerala. He sustained grievous injuries when the family car hit a school bus in Kumbidi in their native Thrissur district on August 15.

Doctors from Fortis Malar Hospitals rushed to Aster Medcity in Kochi on Tuesday and harvested the organs of Adith. Doctors had declared the boy brain-dead early in the morning.

Doctors at the Chennai hospital said they completed the harvest and landed with the organs at the Chennai airport at 8.13pm. “We transported the organs to the hospital in Adyar through a green corridor within 10 minutes. A team of doctors then transplanted the organs in the girl," a doctor said.

Earlier, to find out a match for Adith’s, the authorities sent an alert to all hospitals in Kerala and Tamil Nadu through the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS) and Tamil Nadu Network for Organ Sharing (TNOS). Officials found no Indian on the waiting list so they allotted his heart and lungs to the girl from Kazakhstan.

Adith's liver went to recipients at Lakeshore Hospital and his corneas to the eye bank at Little Flower Hospital.
