A new research that was published in the recent issue of the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology said that there had been an increase in the number of cesarean delivery in US by about 44% of the total births being recorded for the year 2004.

In an attempt to find out the national trend, the researchers had targeted 12 causes for caesarian delivery. These included malpresentation, antepartum bleeding, hypertension and severe hypertension, macrosomia, unengaged head, pre-term gestation, fetal heart rate abnormalities, and maternal soft tissue disorders. After excluding women who had underwent labor, or had previous cesarean deliveries, the study had compiled the data to find out the trend from the year 1994 to 2004.

The results show that the trend is moving upwards for the rate of c-section deliveries, as more and more medical practitioners are adopting the procedure over giving birth normally. The researchers are of opinion that it is required that a national surveillance authority to look into the conditions that may lead to cesarean deliveries so that primary c-section deliveries are restricted, as the woman who has a cesarean delivery the first time, is likely to have them for all successive deliveries.
