Storyline : Joaquim Phoenix as Leonard is emotionally troubled about his break up with his fiancée due to the deadly Tay - Sachs disease they both suffer with, making it impossible to start a family. His emotional stress increases with his parents constantly worrying and suffocating him by being overly caring. Life takes a turn when his father’s client shows interest in buying his dry cleaning business and giving away his daughter. While Joaquim is fascinated with Vinessa, he also develops his likings for Gwyneth who constantly seeks his shoulder to talk her jeremiads. Gwyneth’s affair with a married man comes to an end when she has an abortion and she decides to break up with her boyfriend and relocate to New York along with Joaquim. On the New Year’s eve, Joaquim purchases a proposal ring and prepares to leave with Gwyneth while his family is pursuing talks of his marriage with Vinessa. Fate takes a turn again when Gwyneth turns down the offer as her ex-boyfriend decides to divorce his wife and be with her, Joaquim gets suicidal and decides to end his life and heads towards the sea only to realize that he can still have a life with Vinessa. He heads back home and proposes to Vinessa instead, making his family extremely happy and beginning one of his own.
