What is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome ?  

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a herpes zoster syndrome that occurs when a shingles infection affects the facial nerve just near one of the ears.


Cause(s) :  
  • Virus infection reactivation (after a period of dormancy in the body)
Symptoms :  
  • Rash behind the ears - painful and red
  • Fluid-filled blisters in the ear, on the ear and around the ear
  • Facial weakness or paralysis on the side of the affected ear
  • Ear pain
  • Hearing loss
  • Tinnitus
  • Difficulty closing the eye on the affected side
  • Vertigo or dizziness
  • Change in taste perception, sometimes loss of taste
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Clinical examination
  • Testing of fluid from the rash on the ear
  • Audiometry
  • Neurological tests for facial nerve palsy
