What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome ?  

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by chronic or recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort and a fluctuating disturbance in defecation. Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, and in some patients they may alternate.


Cause(s) :  The exact cause is not known. Triggered by infection, stressful event in life.

Symptoms :  
  • Cramps in abdomen
  • Bloated feeling
  • Urgency of bowel movements, but incomplete evacuation
  • Diarrhea or constipation - sometimes alternating attacks of diarrhea and constipation
  • Weight loss
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Gastroesophageal reflux
  • General symptoms of fatigue, headache and backache

  • Examinations of blood and stool
  • Sigmoidoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Abdominal X Ray
  • Thyroid test
  • Gynecologic examination
