What is Brown-sequard Syndrome ?  

Brown- Séquard Syndrome is a spinal disorder, which involves – characterized by
  • Loss of pain and temperature sensation on contralateral side of body.
  • Loss of proprioception and discriminatory touch on ipsilateral side of body

Cause(s) :  
  • Spinal Cord Tumor
  • Hemisection (cutting) of the spinal cord
  • Multiple-sclerosis
  • Degenerative diseases like herniation of discs and cervical spondylosis
  • Infectious diseases like meningitis, herpes, tuberculosis, syphilis, emphysema
  • Ischemia
  • Tuberculosis or Multiple sclerosis (Inflammatory diseases)
Symptoms :  
  • Loss of bowel control
  • Loss of bladder control
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Loss of vibration sense and fine touch
  • Loss of two-point discrimination
  • Paralysis may occur
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Bladder catherterization
  • Lumbar puncture for biopsy
  • Spinal plain radiography
  • MRI – Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • CT myelography
