Dandy Walker Complex

What is Dandy-walker Syndrome ?  

Dandy Walker Syndrome is a congenital brain malformation that involves the cerebellum (an area at the back of the brain that controls movement) and the fluid-filled spaces around it. Complete absence of cerebellar vermis, the part of the brain located between the two cerebellar hemispheres is the key feature of the syndrome.


Cause(s) :  
  • Abnormal Brain Development
  • Genetic
Symptoms :  
  • Slower motor development
  • Progressive enlargement of the skull
  • For older Children:
  • Vomiting
  • Convulsions
  • Abnormal functioning of the cerebellum may occur Unsteadiness
  • Lack of muscle coordination
  • Jerky movements of the eyes
  • Increased head circumference
  • Bulging at the back of the skull
  • Problems with the nerves that control the eyes, face and neck
  • Abnormal breathing patterns
  • Usually accompanied with malformations of the heart, face, limbs, fingers and toes
  • Absence of corpus callosum (bundle of axons that connect the two cerebral hemispheres)
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Ultrasonography (US)
  • Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI)
