   Population of Selected Countries in the World - 2011

 

China is the most populous country with 22% of the world population, while India stands second with 17.5%.

China’s growth declined from 238 million in 2001 to 131 million in 2011.

As per the growth rate, China is in the third lowest position amongst the ten most populous countries.

India’s population is almost equal to the combined population of few countries such as U.S.A, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Japan.

Even though India accounts for only 2.4% of surface area of the earth, it contributes 17.5% to the world population, which is extremely large. Where as USA, accounting for 7.2% of the earth’s surface area, contributes only 4.5% to the world population.

China with definite slowing down population growth, it is estimated that by 2030, India will be the most populous country in the world with 17.9%.

According to projections by the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, in 2025, India, with 1.46 billion people, will overtake China with 1.39 billion.

Technological and social changes have brought about the steep declines in birth and death rates around the world.
