| Glossary | |
| Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation - A procedure in which bone marrow is removed from a person, stored, and then given back to the person after intensive treatment. | |
| Beta cell transplantation - Surgically placing the beta (islet) cells from the pancreas of one person into the pancreas of another. Beta cells make the insulin that the body needs to use glucose for energy. Although transplanting beta cells may one day help people with diabetes, it is still in the research stage. | |
| Stem Cell Transplantation - A method of replacing immature blood-forming cells that were destroyed by cancer treatment. The stem cells are given to the person after treatment to help the bone marrow recover and continue producing healthy blood cells. | |
| Islet cell transplantation - Surgically placing the beta (islet) cells from the pancreas of one person into the pancreas of another. Beta cells make the insulin that the body needs to use glucose for energy. Although transplanting islet cells may one day help people with diabetes, it is still in the research stage. | |
| Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation - A procedure in which a person receives stem cells, the cells from which all blood cells develop, from a compatible, though not genetically identical, donor. | |
