Dr. Gelman serves as a Distinguished Professor of Anesthesiology of at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He has worked in the field for over 50 years, and brings extensive expertise in the specific specialty of Anesthesiology to his role.

Dr. Gelman was born and grew up in the Soviet Union and emigrated to Israel in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War. In 1976, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, then to Birmingham, Alabama in 1978, where he completed a residency in anesthesiology in 1979, and then became the Chairman of the department at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

"I originally thought surgery would be my career in medicine," Dr. Gelman said. "Then I discovered anesthesiology. But my inspiration to become a doctor came after reading the novel Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis."

Dr. Gelman earned his Medical degree from St. Petersburg State Medical School. He then went on to complete his residency in University Hospitals at Case Western Reserve University, following his immigration to the United States in 1976 He holds a Massachusetts State Medical License and is Board Certified in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

In addition to his work in practice, Dr. Gelman has served as an editor of major anesthesiology journals. He has more than 130 visiting professorships and more than 200 publications, as well as a fellowship, a named lecture at Brigham and Women's Hospital and two endowed chairs in his name, one through the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and the other through Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Gelman dedicates this recognition to his wife, Maria; to his two sons; and six grandchildren.
