TUCSON, Ariz., July 25, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- While the Senate is said to be voting on something related to the Affordable Care Act (ACA or ObamaCare), it is time for both Democrats and Republicans to tell Americans just what they support or oppose about the Act, states the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS).

In an open letter to Senator Mitch McConnell, Speaker Paul Ryan, and President Trump, AAPS suggested voting on full repeal followed immediately by bills to restore various provisions of the Act.

"The provisions should be named by what they actually do, rather than by their purported good intentions," stated AAPS executive director Jane Orient, M.D. For example, "Cover everything 'essential' for everybody, regardless of pre-existing conditions" really means "Keep insurance UNaffordable," she stated.

Other provisions supported by opponents of repeal have the effects of

  • Restricting access to care (ban on competitors to big hospitals)
  • Protecting the managed-care cash cow (Medicaid expansion immune from states' fiscal restraints)
  • Taxing the sick and the "rich" (medical device and other taxes)
  • Taxing the healthy, the young, and the responsible (guaranteed issue/ community rating)
  • Increasing the cost of hiring (employer mandates)
  • Taxing people who can't afford to buy insurance (individual mandate)
  • Subsidizing economically nonviable products (taxpayer bail-out of insurers who can't make a profit because of regulatory requirements).
"If Congressmen are not willing to openly side with the architects of ObamaCare and against their victims, they have no excuse for opposing repeal," Dr. Orient stated.

Once this law is repealed, we can turn our attention to replacing it with freedom and removing the government interventions that have, over the past 70 years, made the system so overpriced and dysfunctional."

The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) is a national organization representing physicians in virtually all specialties and every state. Founded in 1943, AAPS has the motto "omnia pro aegroto," which means "all for the patient."
