Centennial Medical Center''s Surgeons Offer Minimally Invasive Procedures through Belly Button Incision with da Vinci® System

During a da Vinci^® Single-Site^™ surgery, one tiny incision is made in the belly button, approximately one inch long, resulting in a virtually scar-free procedure.

The Food and Drug Administration cleared the specialized Single-Site instruments for use with the da Vinci Surgical System in December 2011. Since introducing the technology at Centennial Medical Center, surgeons are able to offer procedures that have a faster recovery rate, less time lost from work, low blood loss and less pain during recovery.

During the procedure, the surgeon sits comfortably at a console, viewing a 3D, high-definition image of the patient's anatomy. In real-time, the system translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into more precise movements of the miniaturized instruments inside the patient.

Unlike traditional robotic surgeries requiring three to five small incisions, this technology allows for a single incision in the belly button where instruments are placed and the procedure progresses.
