Bay Area Medical Cannabis Company Helps Families In Need

SAN FRANCISCO, April 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Bloom Farms™, a San Francisco-based medical cannabis company, donated its 500,000th healthy meal to the state's nonprofit food banks in April 2017, CEO Michael Ray announced to his staff this week.

For every Bloom Farms vaporizer cartridge sold, the one-for-one cannabis business donates money to food banks across the state to cover the cost of sourcing and distributing healthy meals to families in need -- a program the company started in December 2015.

"True corporate responsibility involves investing equally in the success of your business and the social good," Ray told his staff this week. "It's always been important to me that Bloom Farms grows into a different kind of cannabis company, and I couldn't be prouder of this team and this very important milestone."

More than 5.4 million Californians don't know where their next meal is coming from – and that includes the 2.1 million children who may go to bed hungry each night, according to the California Association for Food Banks. The state's food insecurity rate is 14 percent, and a teenage Ray saw this first-hand growing up in Calaveras County as childhood friends would stay over for the rare treat of a home-cooked meal.

Bloom Farms also gives its staffers four hours of paid volunteer time each month – and many spend those hours volunteering in partner food banks.

"Partnering with Bloom Farms has made all the difference for World Harvest LA and its clients," Glen Curado, CEO of World Harvest LA Food Bank, said recently. "They not only contribute financially, but their staff volunteers with us as often as they can.

"It's an amazing company with extraordinary staff."

Bloom Farms has recently donated to the Calaveras County Butte Fire relief efforts, hosted statewide career fairs and yoga classes and sponsored cultural events including the San Francisco International Film Festival, Wanderlust and the Mill Valley Film Festival.

Bloom Farms is on target to reach 1 million donated meals by Thanksgiving 2017.
