DM is a progressive disease with a genetic link. Veterinarians once believed that this adult-onset condition was an immune disorder related to multiple sclerosis. Research has since proven the cause of DM to be a mutation in the superoxide dismutase1 (SOD1) gene, which causes Lou Gehrig's disease in humans. During the course of DM, the brain and spinal cord gradually degenerate.

Dogs with early stages of DM suffer from weakness and lameness, particularly in the hind legs. At first, pet owners may notice muscle loss and decreased coordination. Dogs may show signs of difficulty sitting up or standing, and they may avoid climbing stairs. These symptoms are similar to several other physical conditions, so it is important that a veterinarian examines the dog to determine the cause.

It is important to take special care of dogs with DM. An alternative to aspirin for dogs, the Assisi Loop may be used in the care process. Physical therapy and exercise are also helpful. There are a variety of devices that can make walking more comfortable for a dog with early stages of DM, such as foot protection boots and harnesses for supporting the hindquarters.

Fortunately, DM is an uncommon disease. Researchers are continuing to study DM treatments. Vitamin B complex, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acid supplements are under investigation, along with chemical therapies.

Assisi Animal Health's clinical solutions help veterinary professionals and pet owners improve the quality of life for animals using the non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical healing device that is based on the same FDA cleared technology used on humans. The Assisi Loop uses low-level pulses of electromagnetic energy to reduce pain and swelling, and to enhance recovery. Proven Science. Positive Results.
