Check the outer ears. Examine your cat's ears by gently folding back each outer ear and looking into the canal. A healthy outer ear will be pale pink and odorless, with minimal or no earwax. If you detect an odor or see any discharge, including redness, swelling, or debris that is dark in color, take your cat to the vet.

Clean the ears. You can clean your cat's ears by placing some liquid ear cleaner onto a clean cotton ball or gauze. Your vet will likely recommend an effective ear cleaner. Gently fold its ear back and wipe any visible earwax or debris. Don't rub it into the ear; rather, gently try to lift it away. Take care not to clean the inner ear canal or you may cause an infection. That job is best left to the vet.

Treat ear mites. Ear mites cause itching, inflammation, and secondary bacterial infection. If you suspect ear mites, take your cat to the vet immediately. Your vet will prescribe a topical medication that should clear up the ear mites. Before administering the medication, gently clear any discharge and debris from the ear. Use a cotton swab with a rolling, lifting motion. Make sure you have plenty of swabs on hand. Then, gently place the medication directly in the ear. The Assisi Loop can also be used to relieve pain. Ask your vet how the Assisi Loop can help alleviate your cat's ear pain.
