PINEHURST, N.C., Nov. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Assisi Animal Health, developers of the Assisi LoopTM, a non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical healing and pain management device for animals, provides information to horse owners about orthopedic conditions. Because there is no safe aspirin for dogs, cats, horses or other animals, it is important to find other treatments for conditions that cause inflammation, such as Developmental Orthopedic Disease.

Developmental Orthopedic Disease (DOD) is a term that relates to several growth disturbances that can occur in horses, including Wobbler's Syndrome, angular limb deformities (ALD), osteochondrosis (OC), flexural limb deformities and physitis. The term DOD originated in 1986 from a Blue Ribbon Panel sponsored by the American Quarter Horse Association.

Symptoms of DOD include swelling in the joints and growth plate, crooked limbs and tendons, and lameness. Horses can develop DOD due to a combination of nutritional, physical and genetic factors. Hereditary factors, such as poor conformation, rapid growth and high body weight due to muscle mass or fat, all contribute to DOD. A veterinarian can make a DOD diagnosis upon giving a physical exam and taking X-rays.

Not all horses develop DOD. Researchers have discovered that when a horse is overfed, the risk for DOD may increase as the consumption of too many calories is a major contributor to the disease. Horses need a balanced diet that results from a specific eating schedule and the inclusion of certain multi-vitamin and mineral supplements. It is essential that horses do not receive an imbalance of Calcium/Phosphorus and/or Copper/Zinc. Hoof care and body conditioning are important for a growing horse, as well.

Horses also need controlled exercise to stay healthy. If you notice that a horse's knees shake after running or walking, it is usually a sign that the animal has worked too hard, which can intensify DOD symptoms.

Assisi Animal Health's clinical solutions help veterinary professionals and pet owners improve the quality of life for animals using the non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical healing device that is based on the same FDA cleared technology used on humans. The Assisi Loop uses low-level pulses of electromagnetic energy to reduce pain and swelling, and to enhance recovery. Proven Science. Positive Results.
