If they are ingested by your pet, Chrysanthemums are toxic. Signs of ingestion include diarrhea, vomiting, hyper-salivation, and lack of coordination.
Ingesting these plants will cause irritation and inflammation to the gastrointestinal tract, which will result in your pet exhibiting redness, swelling, or itchiness of the skin or mouth. The plant's toxins can also directly affect a pet's specific organs, which will result in symptoms that are related to that organ. Examples include difficulty breathing if the airways are compromised; vomiting if the intestines or stomach are affected; drooling or difficulty swallowing if the mouth, throat or esophagus is affected; excessive drinking and urinating if the kidneys are compromised; diarrhea if the toxin has an impact on the intestines or colon; and fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat if the toxin impacts the heart.
If you suspect your pet either ate a Chrysanthemum or another plant that you are uncertain is poisonous, you can take the following steps before heading to the vet, but bring the plant with you if you can't identify it. If your pet vomited or had diarrhea after ingesting the plant, bring a sample to the vet. Your vet may give your pet activated charcoal to absorb any toxins or administer specific drugs to protect the stomach. IV drugs or additional medications may also be administered.
