The winning product, the SAVI breast brachytherapy applicator, is manufactured by Cianna Medical. The SAVI applicator is a single-entry, multicatheter device for the delivery of radiation therapy for early breast cancers. Its innovative design enables physicians to customize radiation and offer the benefits of breast conservation therapy to more patients. The MDEA competition was established in 1998 and is organized by Canon Communications LLC. The program recognizes worldwide companies and individuals who are responsible for creating innovative medical devices. Entries are evaluated by an independent team of experts from multiple disciplines on the basis of design and engineering features. Awards are offered in 10 categories, such as finished packaging and radiological and electromechanical devices.
