$250K Prize Could Help Isha Care Free Clinic Expand to Meet Community Health Crisis

MCMINNVILLE, Tenn., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Last Fall Tom Miller began to rapidly lose weight. "Within months he was down to only 110 pounds," explained his daughter Christy. "He could not keep his food down.  I knew if we didn't do something quickly he was literally going to starve to death." Mr. Miller had lost his TennCare health coverage eight years before.  Because he was uninsured, everywhere he turned for help, he was refused care.

Mr. Miller is just one example of a growing trend—many Tennessee families can no longer afford the skyrocketing cost of health care and health insurance.  In fact, according to Families USA (March 2009) an alarming 32% of Tennessee residents were without health insurance last year, nearly 75% of whom were employed at the time.

Seeing the escalating trend of Tennessee's uninsured, Dr. Kalpana Rajdev, a McMinnville-based physician, took action.  She developed a plan to create a free rural medical clinic and rallied a group of volunteer physicians to join her. On September 2008, Isha Care Free Clinic opened its doors in a temporary space at the local community center.

Ms. Miller read about the Isha Care Free Clinic in the local newspaper and scheduled an appointment.  "The doctor examined my father and was able to make a referral for diagnosis and medical treatment at a greatly reduced cost," explained Ms. Miller.  The prognosis was terminal, but regular treatments allowed Mr. Miller to swallow and discounted prescription medication helped to manage severe pain.

The timely intervention of Isha Care offered Tom Miller's family precious days with him, which his daughter will forever cherish.  "I'm very thankful to the Isha Care Clinic.  Without the doctor at the clinic and the help she offered my father when he needed it most, he would have suffered much more pain and we would have lost him much sooner," said Ms. Miller.

Isha Care is competing in an online contest hosted by Pepsi to win $250,000 If Isha Care wins this prize the Clinic will be able to construct a permanent medical facility and expand its free health care services. Your vote can make a difference. Visit the Isha Care website: www.ishacare.org or the contest page at www.refresheverything.com/ishacare.  The top two finishers of the contest both win $250,000.  Any U.S. resident can cast one vote every day, so supporters can bookmark the link and vote daily to help win the prize.  Voting ends Sunday, Feb 28 at 11pm CST.
