WASHINGTON, Oct. 16 -- The YWCA USA and its nearly 300 local associations will mark their 2009 Week Without Violence on October 18-24 with compelling educational events that focus public attention on the devastating impact of domestic violence on American women and their families.

“More than one million women will be physically assaulted by their intimate partners this year,” said Lorraine Cole, PhD, YWCA USA CEO. “This is totally unacceptable and YWCAs across America are committed to stopping this serious criminal behavior.”

The YWCA’s award-winning Week Without Violence Web site, www.ywcaWeekWithoutViolence.org, offers women a Personal Safety Plan and domestic violence resource referrals. A new Raise Your Voice section features an online poster contest and quilt project that invite viewers to create messages of empowerment and encouragement for victims of domestic violence. In addition, hundreds of local YWCA community events are listed in its Get Involved section.

Local YWCA associations comprise the nation’s largest provider of domestic violence services and offer comprehensive emergency shelter, transitional housing and counseling services to millions of women and children. A grassroots initiative when it began in 1995, YWCA’s Week Without Violence is now a global campaign involving hundreds of communities and countries.

Domestic violence will affect one of every four women during her lifetime, according to the U.S. Department Justice. Further, Cole noted, younger women are most at-risk for domestic violence and also most worried about it. In a YWCA-commissioned national public opinion poll, 54 per cent of American women said they are worried they or someone they know will be a victim of domestic violence but 68 percent of women under age 30 are worried (What Women Want, Nov. 2008).
