WellPoint's Braly Commits $300,000 to Attract Top-Level Giving to United Way

INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 14 United Way of Central Indiana's(UWCI) progress toward its $40 million goal received a boost today with theannouncement of the annual campaign's largest individual pledge so far fromWellPoint, Inc., president and CEO Angela F. Braly and her husband, Doug.

The Bralys will give $100,000 a year for three years as part of UnitedWay's plan to increase membership in its two fastest-growing giving groups:The Tocqueville Society, whose members commit to give at least $10,000 eachyear, and The Women's Initiative, where membership begins at $2,500 per year.

The Braly gift will be used to encourage new "leadership" levelcontributions that could generate nearly $1 million in new funding for UnitedWay's priorities: sustaining vital human services and helping kids enterschool ready to learn and graduate ready to earn.

"Doug and I are honored to be able to encourage others to give to UnitedWay and the outstanding programs it supports," said Angela Braly. "UnitedWay's efforts are even more important in these economic times and, now morethan ever, it is essential that we all give in a way that can have a profoundimpact on our community."

Sam Odle, UWCI's campaign chair and executive vice president and chiefoperations officer, Clarian Health, said growth of the top tier of givers iskey to reaching the $40 million goal.

"The Bralys' generosity is a real dose of hopefulness in this challengingeconomic climate," said Odle. "This incentive makes United Way's alreadyfirst-class philanthropic value even better."

United Way's plan is to attract 500 members in each group. Currently,there are 354 in the Women's Initiative and 360 in Tocqueville Society.

The Angela and Doug Braly Philanthropic Empowerment Match will, for thefirst year, pay half the minimum gift to become a member of Tocqueville and dothe same for new Women's Initiative members.

In addition, the Bralys have included a special provision for women under40 to join The Women's Initiative with an initial gift of $1,000. This is areflection of the Bralys' commitment to provide young women with a powerfulmentoring opportunity -- both philanthropic and professional. In the secondand third years, new members must commit to increase their gifts to the fullcontribution.

UWCI's Women's Initiative was created in 2003 by two other localexecutives, Ron Dollens, then CEO of Guidant Corporation and United Way'sannual campaign chair, and Alecia DeCoudreaux, executive at Eli Lilly & Co.The Tocqueville Society is a national philanthropic organization that is morethan 20 years old in Central Indiana.
