"We're proud of our rich history of caring for children," said SteveLepinski, executive director of Washburn Center for Children. "Our goal is toraise awareness of children's mental health issues and to help those childrenin need. Early investments in children's mental health save money and reducepain and suffering for children, families and society."

An estimated 70,000 Minnesota children have a severe emotional disturbancethat greatly impairs their functioning at home and at school and only one infive is getting treatment.(1) In addition, the majority of children who enterthe juvenile justice system have a behavior problem that stems from anuntreated mental health problem.

Washburn, now a leading resource on children's mental health, wasoriginally founded as the Washburn Memorial Orphan Asylum in 1883 from thegenerous donation of Washburn Mill (now the Mill City Museum) founderCadwallader Washburn and has evolved through the years into its currentposition as a leading resource serving children with social, emotional andbehavioral challenges. Mr. Washburn wanted to create a secure, caringrelationship for orphaned children, and was inspired to do so after theWashburn Mill explosion in 1878. Washburn's rich history is part of the"MN150" exhibit at the Minnesota Historical Society. (The Washburn CrosbyCompany eventually became General Mills.)
