CHARLOTTE, N.C., Feb. 23 Southeast Anesthesiology Consultants (SAC) and its Quantum Clinical Navigation System division have extended their relationship with UnitedHealthcare, ensuring that UnitedHealthcare commercial health plan participants have continued, in-network access to Southeast Anesthesiology Consultants' full scope of affordable, quality anesthesia and pain-management services.

"We are pleased and dedicated to maintaining patient safety, quality care and decreasing health care costs," said Richard L. Gilbert, M.D., MBA, chairman and CEO of Southeast Anesthesiology Consultants and its Quantum division. "We look forward to building on our relationship with UnitedHealthcare."

"Our continuing relationship with Southeast Anesthesiology demonstrates our mutual commitment to maintaining access to local, quality health care services for consumers," said Garland Scott, CEO, UnitedHealthcare of the Carolinas.

UnitedHealthcare serves almost a million consumers in North and South Carolina through a healthcare network that includes more than 24,000 physicians and about 200 hospitals and medical facilities.

SAC has long showed its dedication to improving the quality of care and decreasing costly medical errors by using its perioperative quality management system called Quantum Clinical Navigation System. Quantum is a data driven, continuous quality improvement system that measures 50 clinical indicators for every patient undergoing anesthesia. The system is designed to assure patient satisfaction, improve clinician performance and increase operational efficiency while reducing costly medical errors.

"The combination of Southeast's highly trained sub-specialized physicians and our Quantum system have achieved clinical results that have consistently exceeded national benchmarks for quality," said Bryan May, M.D., MBA, chairman of Southeast's Corporate Quality Assurance Committee.

For example, postoperative heart attacks and strokes are significantly below published studies. Quantum checklists ensure compliance with best practice protocols such as timely administration of pre-surgical antibiotics resulting in lower surgical infections. According to a 2007 Anesthesiology Journal report, Southeast's incidence of awareness while under anesthesia was less than 10 percent of the national average.
