NEW YORK, March 24, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Intelligent systems have revolutionized modern healthcare, providing new ways for caregivers to deliver treatments to patients, and supporting a streamlined approach to track vital medical information. Standards support such innovative healthcare systems by ensuring that they operate reliably and effectively for caregivers and patients alike. To commemorate the enormous role that standardization has on global health, the 2017 U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day on October 19, 2017, will highlight the theme "Smart Health: Using Intelligent Systems to Improve the Quality and Delivery of Health Care in a More Integrated, Focused Approach."

The 2017 World Standards Day theme reflects the realities of the modern age of healthcare and the needs for the future of patients and caregivers. As the Internet of Things (IoT) evolves, for example, intelligent healthcare systems affect how care and treatments are delivered in ways that are new to the healthcare industry. Intelligent healthcare systems provide a distributed environment that requires a purposeful precision and a level of reliability and availability to maintain their effectiveness. Standards play a large part in supporting these systems to improve the quality and delivery of healthcare for a more integrated, focused approach.

This year, the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day will celebrate standardization's vital role in healthcare with a reception and gala dinner at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington, D.C. The event will include the presentation of the 2017 Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award, which is named after the late U.S. Secretary of Commerce and honors an individual who has effectively promoted standardization as a key tool in the elimination of global trade barriers. The 2017 World Standards Day Paper Competition winners will also be announced by the president of SES – The Society for Standards Professionals.

World Standards Day was initially launched in 1970, and is now celebrated by nations around the globe. U.S. activities are organized annually by a planning committee consisting of representatives from the standards and conformity assessment community. The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) will serve as the event's 2017 administrating organization. The event is co-chaired each year by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
