SAINT PAUL, Minn., Nov. 14 November 14 and 15 are two different dates with one common denominator - smoking. Wednesday, Nov. 14, is World COPD Day. COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is closely linked to smoking - approximately 90 percent of the estimated 350,000 Minnesotans with COPD are current or former smokers. There is no cure for COPD, which is now the 4th leading cause of death in the United States. Mary Manning, a St. Paul resident with COPD and a former smoker, will speak during the reopening ceremonies of the American Lung Association of Minnesota's headquarters at 490 Concordia Avenue in Saint Paul at 3 p.m. Media are welcome to attend and interview Mary about her experiences with the lung disease.

The Great American Smokeout will be celebrated on Thursday, November 15, is a national smoking cessation event with roots in Minnesota. In 1974, Lynn R. Smith, editor of the Monticello Times, spearheaded the state's first D-Day, or Don't Smoke Day. The idea quickly spread and three years later, the first national Great American Smokeout was held. The American Lung Association of Minnesota is coordinating an event at the University of Minnesota-Duluth campus.
