WASHINGTON, June 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This week, two major Virginia faith denominations, the United Methodists and the United Church of Christ, together representing hundreds of thousands of Virginians, endorsed the Faith United Against Tobacco in Virginia Resolution.  The resolution calls for comprehensive policies in the state to reduce smoking, particularly among children, including increasing the state tobacco tax, fully funding tobacco prevention and cessation programs, and making all workplaces smoke-free.

"By endorsing this Resolution, we United Methodists have made a clear commitment to policies that will save lives in our state from tobacco caused illness and death," said Virginia Conference United Methodist Bishop Charlene Kammerer . "We look forward to working with other Virginia faith communities to make these reasonable tobacco control policies a reality."

"For years, faith leaders across the country have worked successfully to reduce smoking by these tried and true public health policies," said Rev. John Deckenback, United Church of Christ Conference Minister for the Central Atlantic Conference. "Members of the United Church of Christ in Virginia will work very hard to enact these policies here."

Faith United Against Tobacco is a coalition of thirty national faith groups and denominations which work for comprehensive tobacco control policies at the national, state and local levels. The faith coalition played a key role in the enactment of landmark federal legislation last year to authorize the FDA to regulate tobacco products.  For more information please visit
