WALTHAM, Mass., Jan. 7 According to Millennium Research Group's (MRG's) US Markets for Plaque and Thrombus Management Devices 2009 report, the thrombectomy device market, including both aspiration and mechanical devices, is expected to grow to more than $875 million by 2013.

The number of aspiration procedures performed in coronary indications is expected to more than double its 2007 value by the end of 2009. Coronary thrombectomies grew significantly in 2008 due predominantly to an increase in the use of aspiration catheters for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. Positive clinical data supporting the use of aspiration catheters will remain the main driving force of coronary thrombectomies over the next five years.

"Multiple studies, beginning in late 2007 and including the most recent TAPAS trial, show similar accumulated results," says Stephanie Labelle, Senior Analyst at MRG. "Evidence suggests that AMI patients experience improved outcomes with aspiration and stenting compared to percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and stenting."

Mechanical aspiration is used more widely in peripheral (non-coronary) indications, with the largest use coming in arteriovenous (AV) access management procedures. AV access grafts, used in patients receiving hemodialysis, may cause clotting because of their synthetic material composition; mechanical thrombectomy is often performed in patients with AV access grafts in order to clear out blood clots. The growing number of patients receiving hemodialysis in the US will lead to a greater use of mechanical thrombectomy; as a result, the mechanical thrombectomy market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of more than 8% from 2008 through 2013.

MRG's US Markets for Plaque and Thrombus Management Devices 2009 report provides coverage of atherectomy, thrombectomy, chronic total occlusion crossing devices, and embolic protection devices, and highlights key industry competitors including Boston Scientific, Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. (CSI), ev3, Johnson & Johnson Cordis, MEDRAD Interventional/Possis, Medtronic, Spectranetics, and more.
