The Legacy Companies Expands with Two New Principals: Real Estate Veterans John Griswold and Phil Anderson
ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 17 -- The Legacy Companies, a specialized real estate investment and advisory services group, announced today the appointments of John A. Griswold as a principal of Legacy Hotel Advisors and Phil Anderson as a principal of Legacy Healthcare Advisors – a recruiting effort that builds on its base of prior CNL executives and bolsters a collective track record to leverage significant opportunities in an undercapitalized real estate market.
Griswold and Anderson are both former CNL chief operating officers who were instrumental in growing, managing and positioning their respective companies for successful dispositions, totaling $13.0 billion.
"Both John and Phil have been close colleagues for many years and we're delighted to bring their wealth of experience and visionary leadership to our Legacy family," said Thomas J. Hutchison III, chairman of The Legacy Companies. "This is an opportune time to pursue a number of exciting investment and advisory projects, and our newly expanded team's real estate knowledge and business relationships are truly unparalleled in the hotel and healthcare industries."
John A. Griswold
John A. Griswold joins Legacy with 35 years of hospitality experience, including his most recent role as founder and president of Harbor Hotel Investments, LLC, an owner and developer of full-service hotels and resorts. From 2003 until 2007, he served as president and chief operating officer of CNL Hotels & Resorts, Inc., one of the premier lodging REITs that owned 130 assets including the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa in Maui, the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix and the Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott at Grande Lakes in Orlando. Drawing on his ability to use the capital markets to create wealth, Griswold was instrumental in the $6.5 billion sale of CNL Hotels & Resorts to Morgan Stanley in April 2007.
Before joining CNL, Griswold was president of Tishman Hotel Corporation with nearly two decades at the firm, overseeing such developments as the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resorts in Florida; the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers; and the Westin New York at Times Square. Griswold previously served as the opening general manager of the Buena Vista Palace Hotel in The Walt Disney World Resort, and also held a variety of operations and development positions at Walt Disney World during the forefront of his career.
Phil Anderson brings over 20 years of seniors' housing and healthcare experience to the company. He previously served as chief operating officer and executive vice president of CNL Retirement Properties, Inc., a leading REIT focused on seniors' housing properties and medical facilities, until the completion of the REIT's $5.3 billion merger with Health Care Property Investors. He was instrumental in the growth of the company from a start-up to a dominant health care REIT with over 270 properties, becoming the nation's second largest owner of seniors' housing units in less than six years. Following the merger in 2006, Anderson formed The Genova Company to acquire real estate and provide advisory services related to seniors' housing investment and development.
Anderson has also previously worked with Classic Residence by Hyatt, Hyatt Hotels and the Pritzker family. As senior vice president of development and acquisition, he oversaw the development and acquisition of upscale seniors' housing, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities. Anderson has been a member of the American Senior Housing Association since 1994 and currently serves on the executive board. In addition, he has served as a member of the board of directors of the National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing and Care Industries (NIC) and Westminster Retirement Communities. In 2008, he was also elected to serve as City Commissioner for the City of Winter Park, Florida.
