NORWOOD, N.J., May 12 This summer, Tony Sparber celebrates 30 years of running successful weight loss camps for kids ages 7-19. He's the founder, owner, and director of one of the most well known weight loss camps in the country, Camp Pocono Trails in Reeders, Pennsylvania.

Sparber, 54, first started running weight loss camps in 1980 at the age of 24. He initially ran Weight Watchers Camps with his family and left there in 1992 to open New Image Camp in Connecticut. Seven years later, he moved the camp to Pennsylvania and renamed it Camp Pocono Trails. Although he hates the term "fat camp," Sparber accepts the title, "The King of Fat Camp" as he's truly a pioneer in the weight loss camp industry.

His 30 years of success stem from the philosophies he instills in each camper. The camp provides an environment where losing weight and having fun are both integral parts of the experience. Sparber promotes health, wellness, integrity and learning in a fun, mainstream way, while helping children simultaneously build self-esteem and life-long friendships along the way. In addition, he cares deeply for his campers' well-being, health, and future. He's a hands-on owner with thousands of success stories.

Sparber says, "Michelle Obama's 'Let's Move' initiative to reduce childhood obesity will finally force parents, teachers, schools, food manufacturers, and restaurants to be held accountable for this nationwide epidemic. Good examples need to be set for these kids through food choices, portion control, and the amount of exercise incorporated into their daily routines. This is a serious problem and we need to act before it's too late."

Sparber believes his tried and true methods of working with children (such as teaching sensible eating habits, and setting realistic goals within a fun-filled summer camp environment) have helped to prevent many serious health risks associated with obesity, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type-two diabetes.

Camp Pocono Trails has been featured on two MTV documentaries, Fat Camp and Return to Fat Camp, as well as on Ruby, Good Morning America, Dr. Phil, The Today Show, and in People magazine, The New York Times, among others.
