Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of kidney disease. Twenty million American adults -- about one in eleven -- already have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and 325,000 with kidney failure are on dialysis. African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and seniors (65 and over) are at increased risk of developing this illness. Early detection and education can help prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure.

"Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects millions of Americans and most do not even know it. Over KAT Walk weekend, diverse communities from across the nation will learn about the importance of getting tested for CKD to prevent or delay kidney failure," said Barbara Lawson, president of The Kidney TRUST.

The Kidney TRUST, an independent public charity, was formed to increase awareness of kidney disease through public education and testing programs so that progression of CKD to kidney failure can be delayed or prevented. In 2007 The TRUST is piloting a low cost testing and screening program and a financial assistance program for CKD patients. To register for the KAT Walk, please visit http://www.kidneytrust.org or email [email protected].

KAT Walk 2007 national sponsors include: DaVita Inc., C&S Sales, Shire, IKON, American Regent, Genzyme, and Henry Schein.
