BOSTON, May 23, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The CenteringPregnancy® Model: The Power of Group Health Care

has been chosen by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) for the 2017 Book of the Year Award. Co-authored by Centering Healthcare Institute's (CHI) founder, Sharon Schindler Rising and the late Charlotte
Houde Quimby
, the book was recognized for its impact on midwifery and women's health.

Using real stories from Centering participants and providers, the book is an invaluable resource for all health care stakeholders. It takes a comprehensive look at the innovative, evidence-based CenteringPregnancy model of group care and how it improves:

  • healthcare outcomes
  • patient-provider engagement
  • patient learning and activation
  • costs to the healthcare system

"It was important to capture the power of the model through content and stories. I am honored that the book is receiving this recognition from ACNM," says, Sharon Schindler Rising. "It was a privilege to work closely with Charlotte in the conception and writing of the book – it is one way her legacy lives on.  My hope is that this book will inspire others to experience the joy of providing care in groups."

Sharon Schindler Rising will be presented with the award at the ACNM Annual Meeting Awards Celebration in Chicago, Illinois on Wednesday May 24, 2017.

CHI is improving health by transforming care through Centering groups. It has developed and sustained the Centering model in more than 470 practice sites and in some of the largest health systems. The combination of health assessment, interactive activities and community building allows learning from the provider and from one another. CenteringPregnancy brings 8-12 pregnant women into a group setting and follows the recommended schedule of ten prenatal visits. CenteringParenting provides family centered well-child care for the first two years and follows the Bright Futures™ nationally recognized guidelines.

ACNM is the professional association representing certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives in the U.S. Their members are primary care providers for women throughout the lifespan, with an emphasis on pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecologic and reproductive health. ACNM provides research, administers and promotes continuing education programs, establishes clinical practice standards, and creates liaisons with state and federal agencies and members of Congress to increase the visibility and recognition of midwifery care.
