The National Council for Suicide Prevention supports World Suicide Prevention Day with global campaign

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 8, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Council for Suicide Prevention (NCSP) launched the Take 5 to Save Lives suicide prevention campaign in recognition and support of World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) -- an annual event held each year on September 10. The campaign's website, www.take5tosavelives.org, encourages everyone to take five minutes of their day to learn about suicide prevention and to share the campaign with others.

With over 800,000 suicides globally each year, in partnership with the World Health Organization, the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) established WSPD in 2003 to increase the conversation about suicide prevention which is a serious public health issue.

"Take 5 has grown each year in recognition and support from people around the world," said Dr. Dan Reidenberg, Managing Director of the NCSP and US Representative to IASP. "By using social media and encouraging people to learn about suicide we are making a difference and saving lives."

This year's WSPD theme is "Connect, Communicate and Care" which embodies preventing suicide. Take 5 incorporates this theme and includes a tool kit with Facebook profile pictures, positive messages, banners, posters and other ways for people to join the movement.

"Everyone has a role in preventing suicide, and the Take 5 campaign makes it simple to get involved in suicide prevention and easy to share with friends and family, colleagues, or on your social media sites," Reidenberg said. "Take 5 shares five of the most important tools we know of in preventing suicide, and you can learn all five from your home, work or smart phone."
