South Dakota Wellness Challenges:
Weight
Fifty-one percent of South Dakota residents consider themselves obese oroverweight compared to 45 percent of Americans, yet only 23 percent of SouthDakota respondents gauge their state of wellness by their current weight.

Stress
Thirty-five percent of South Dakotans report having a "very" or "somewhat"high stress level, versus 40 percent of Americans, according to the AmwayGlobal Wellness Index. Fifty-four percent of South Dakota residents find thattalking to family and friends is a highly effective way of coping with theirstress. Increasing physical activity (46 percent) and sleep (29 percent) alsotop the list, while 24 percent turn to food for comfort and 13 percentpractice yoga. Only 8 percent of residents decrease the time they spend usingtechnology gadgets to reduce stress.
Exercise
The survey shows that 24 percent of South Dakota residents, versus23 percent nationally, are not exercising for at least 30 minutes or more at atime on a regular basis. That's well under the Centers for Disease Control(CDC) recommendation of a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physicalactivity per day or a minimum of 20 minutes of vigorous-intensity physicalactivity three days a week. When it comes to the work commute, 83 percent ofSouth Dakota residents drive or use public transportation. However, when theydo exercise, the focus is on general wellness (43 percent), cardiovascularendurance (21 percent) and weight loss (18 percent).
Sleep
While 35 percent of South Dakota residents report that not getting enoughexercise is one of the biggest wellness challenges, 34 percent also reportgetting enough sleep as a major challenge. Only 7 percent of South Dakotansjudge their current state of wellness by the amount of sleep they get.
The Economy, Election and Wellness
Forty-two percent of Americans, versus 39 percent of South Dakotans,report that the economy is having a negative impact on their wellness choices.For the nation, current economic conditions also are negatively affecting thewellness of 51 percent of non-working parents, versus 43 percent of workingparents. And, when it comes to the battle of the sexes, the health of women isaffected more by the economy (44 percent) than men (40 percent). Overall,25 percent of South Dakotans and 33 percent of Americans claim that thecandidates' positions on personal wellness will influence how they vote thiselection.
