Survey Shows New Mexico Residents Are Less Stressed Than National Average

ADA, Mich., Sept. 15 While 93 percent of Americans reportattempting to make everyday choices to be healthy and live well, 43 percent ofNew Mexico residents say they struggle to do so, according to the Amway GlobalWellness Index, a recent national survey of more than 15,000 Americansregarding their health and wellness. New Mexico residents report that the twomain barriers preventing them from living a healthier lifestyle include lackof time (43 percent) and costs associated with eating a balanced diet(20 percent).

New Mexico Wellness Challenges:

Exercise

The survey shows that 21 percent of New Mexico residents, versus23 percent nationally, are not exercising for at least 30 minutes or more at atime on a regular basis. While better than the national average, that's wellunder the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendation of a minimum of30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per day or a minimum of20 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity three days a week. When itcomes to the work commute, 87 percent of New Mexico residents drive or usepublic transportation. However, when they do exercise, the focus is on generalwellness (31 percent), cardiovascular endurance (30 percent) and weight loss(16 percent).

Stress

Thirty-three percent of New Mexicans report having a "very" or "somewhat"high stress level, compared to the national average (40 percent), according tothe Amway Global Wellness Index. Fifty-two percent of New Mexico residentsfind that talking to family and friends is a highly effective way of copingwith their stress. Increasing physical activity (45 percent) and sleep(31 percent) also top the list, while 15 percent practice yoga and 13 percentturn to food for comfort. Only nine percent of residents decrease the timethey spend using technology gadgets to reduce stress.

Sleep

While 36 percent of New Mexico residents reported that not getting enoughexercise is one of the biggest wellness challenges, 29 percent also reportgetting enough sleep as a major challenge. Only 11 percent of New Mexicansjudge their current state of wellness by the amount of sleep they get.

Weight

Thirty-six percent of New Mexico residents consider themselves obese oroverweight, yet only 21 percent gauge their state of wellness by their currentweight.

The Economy, Election and Wellness

Forty-two percent of Americans, versus 41 percent of New Mexicans, reportthat the economy is having a negative impact on their wellness choices. Forthe nation, current economic conditions also are negatively affecting thewellness of 51 percent of non-working parents, versus 43 percent of workingparents. And, when it comes to the battle of the sexes, the health of women isaffected more by the economy (44 percent) than men (40 percent). Overall, 30percent of New Mexicans and 33 percent of Americans claim that the candidates'positions on personal wellness will influence how they vote this election.
